In Quest: A Time of Heroes, one player takes the role of "Quest Master" who narrates the game, reading scenes to up to four other players. The players take the roles of heroes who then choose what course to take that will lead to success. Player actions and choices impact the direction of their adventure and each choice the characters take in the quest helps develop their characters; enabling them to learn new Gifts, gain items and improve their Attributes. Quest is part paragraph adventure game, part role-playing game, and part tabletop tactical combat game. Players' characters have Attributes and Gifts that, combined with the roll of a dice, give each a chance to overcome challenges. While the Quest Master is armed with event cards and encounters that attempt to thwart the heroes' best attempts at success.
The game includes a beginning adventure that will quickly teach both Quest Master and the players the basics of the game. More advanced players can utilize rules that allow them to create their own adventures.
Each adventure in Quest is playable in a session, with games lasting around an hour. However, the Quest Master can utilize scripted pauses between quests allowing for longer game sessions, or pauses between game nights.
